You do not need a sprawling yard to create a place you look forward to coming home to. Start with the moments you want outdoors, then design the pool around them.
Picture an ordinary Saturday
Coffee beside the water. A quick afternoon dip. Dinner outside with room for everyone to sit comfortably. Those everyday moments are a better starting point than trying to fit the largest possible pool into a small yard.
Choose the experience you would use most: swimming, soaking, lounging, or entertaining. A compact pool can make the water the centerpiece while leaving space for the parts of the backyard that make you want to stay.
Give the deck as much attention as the water
Draw the furniture into the first layout. A dining table needs room for chairs to pull out, loungers need space to walk around, and the route from the back door should remain comfortable when guests are outside. These details are easy to miss in an empty plan.
Place seating where you can enjoy the pool without interrupting the path around it. One generous gathering area can work better than several narrow strips of deck that are difficult to furnish.
Choose one feature that earns its space
A spa, sun shelf, or in-water bench can change how the backyard is used. Each also occupies room that might otherwise become open water. Ask your designer to show that tradeoff in the plan before adding all three.
If evening relaxation matters most, make the spa a priority. If you imagine reading beside the water, consider whether a deck lounge or a shelf gives you the better experience.
- A simple pool shape aligned with the home
- An integrated spa when soaking is a priority
- A bench for conversation without a large shelf
- A clear view from the home's main living space
Find out what your property can accommodate
A backyard that looks open may still have limitations. Property boundaries, easements, utilities, access for construction, drainage, and local requirements all need review. Equipment also needs an appropriate location and room for future service.
Bring a survey or site plan if you have one, along with photos of the yard and side access. A property review can establish what is possible before you become attached to a specific size or layout.
Make the first design conversation specific
Bring three inspiration images and explain what you like about each: the water color, the seating, the spa, or the view from inside. Then list your two must-haves and one feature you could live without.
JB Pools can use those priorities to discuss a custom pool and outdoor space that fit your Coachella Valley property. The aim is a backyard that feels comfortable on an ordinary day as well as when you entertain.
