A pair of loungers in the water looks inviting. The best sun shelf also fits your furniture, your shade plan, and the way you actually want to use the pool.

Think of it as an outdoor room in the water

A Baja shelf, also called a tanning ledge or sun shelf, is a shallow platform within the pool. It creates a place to recline near the water, sit and talk, or pause between swims. Its appeal is the slower pace it brings to the backyard.

Before adding one, picture who will use it and when. A shelf designed for two adults relaxing in loungers may need a different layout from one intended mainly as a broad entry into the pool.

Select the furniture before finalizing the depth

In-water loungers have model-specific water-depth limits and footprint requirements. Ledge Lounger's published specifications, for example, distinguish between models and depths. Choosing furniture after the pool is built can leave you with fewer options than expected.

Give your builder the actual product dimensions and approved water-depth range. Confirm the finished water depth over the shelf, the space between seats, and the room needed to enter and leave the water. A photograph alone cannot establish those measurements.

Plan shade at the hours you will use it

Look at the yard in the morning and afternoon. The shelf that appears perfectly placed on a plan might receive direct sun during your preferred lounging hours. Nearby walls, the home, and shade structures all change that experience.

If an umbrella is part of your idea, discuss its location and any required sleeve before construction. Check the umbrella manufacturer's wind and operating instructions, and plan where the umbrella and furniture will go when removed.

Protect the space you want for swimming

A shelf uses part of the pool footprint. In a compact pool, a large lounging area may leave less uninterrupted water than you expect. Ask to see the shelf, steps, spa, and open swimming area together at scale.

It is also reasonable to choose a smaller bench or keep loungers on the deck. Shallow water still requires active supervision of children; a shelf should never be treated as a substitute for pool safety measures.

  • Mark the actual lounger footprints on the plan
  • Keep the entry route clear of furniture
  • Review the transition from shelf to deeper water
  • Coordinate the shelf with any planned pool cover

Design for the way you relax

Bring the furniture you like, your preferred time outdoors, and a short description of how you use the pool. JB Pools can discuss how a shelf fits into a new design or whether it is feasible within a remodel.

The goal is simple: a place you will enjoy using, with enough room left for everything else you want from your pool.
